Clean skin is one of the most important steps to having beautiful skin. BUT... how "clean" is clean?
Everyone has been inundated by sales people, skincare commercials, and advertisements pretending to be "articles" that discuss facial washes, cleansing creams, foams, exfoliators, masks, scrubs, peels, astringents etc, that all portend to be the ultimate way to insure your skin is clean. They lob around statements like " "noncomedogenic", "non-acnegenic"", "Fragrance Free", "for sensitive skin", along with words like 'Pure" and "Natural" or even "Organic", to entice you to believe that their products are the best. If you've read my article "The Truth about "Organic" and Certification", then you are already familiar with the basic premise that there is no truth in advertising any more and that the very organizations that are purported in place to protect the public, are in actuality funded, run and lobbied by the corporations they are suppose to be Watchdogging over. Thus most claims made by cosmetic, skin care and personal hygiene companies are questionable at best....
The vast majority of main stream commercial cosmetics, skincare, and toiletries contain at least one ingredient that is petroleum based, such as Mineral Oil, Petrolatum, Liquid paraffin, and Paraffin oil. It is a proven fact that ALL of these substance clog pores and even worse, while part of the "oil" sits on the surface and blocks the skins ability to properly breathe (and binds to dirt and other oils), part of the chemical IS absorbed into the skin, and given free access to the body. Multiple studies have expressed serious concerns about the effects of Petroleum on human health.
This is one of the main reasons that I started making my own skin care products over 20 years ago, because it was almost impossible to find moisturizers or creams without petroleum products in them, AND..... I really didn't trust products with ingredients that had names I had no hope of being able to pronounce.
Back to our topic at hand: Clean skin.
In order to have healthy vibrant smooth skin, you need to have clean skin. I would even take this a step farther and also say: in order to BE healthy and vibrant, you need to take care of your skin! Your skin is the largest organ in your body and is also your secondary endocrine system. Every single thing you place on your skin- from toiletries, to soaps, detergents, fabric softeners, perfumes, topical medicine, bug sprays (the list goes on and on), is ABSORBED through your skin and dispersed throughout your body, even going so far as to be absorbed into your brain and other vital organs. Healthy skin is vital for over all health in general.
- Step 1: STOP using all chemicals on your skin!
- Step 2: Clean your skin properly so that it can breathe and act they way it's suppose to, to maintain healthy interactions between the skin and the rest of the body's organs and systems.
- Step 3: Protect and nourish your skin: both from the inside with the foods we eat, and externally, with the products we apply to our skin daily.
Even using completely natural skin care products, like the lotions, serums and balms created by Our Gaia's Gardens, we still need to pay attention to cleansing our skin. Harsh cleansers and soaps that strip the skin of it's own natural protective oils are not the answer. Cleaning your skin shouldn't leave your face feeling dry and tight.
Even homemade preparations have a tendency to either excessively dry out the skin, or leave behind dirt and oils. Over the years, I have tried a multitude of methods of cleansing, from soaps, to foams, to cleansing creams, to oils.... and I've always come back to clay. Why Clay? Because a finely ground dried clay, when mixed with a bit of warm water, not only removes dirt and makeup through it's gentle exfoliation action, the clay itself also absorbs excess oils and toxins and cleanses the pores, without striping them dry. Clay is also multi-purposed, and can be used in many different ways, from a gentle cleanser, to a heavier exfoliator, a deep cleansing face mask, and with the addition of certain essential oils- even treatments for pimples, infections and skin irritation.
My favorite clays for years have always been Kaolin (white clay) and Bentonite. When I arrived in Morocco and discovered Ghassoul, I fell in love with clay all over again!
Ghassoul Clay has been used for thousands of years by the Berber tribes. It is a volcanic clay that is extracted from the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, is sun dried and then ground into a very fine powder, with an almost silky texture.
Ghassoul not only deeply cleanses, tones and detoxifies, it also conditions the skin and improves elasticity, leaving it soft and silky smooth.
